Course Descriptions

We are so excited about the enrichment classes we have put together for you!  
All classes are led by passionate and experienced instructors.


Adventurers (ages 5-8)

Philosophy
Join us as we use engaging children’s literature to introduce big ideas to little minds. This class is based on the work of Thomas E. Wartenberg and promises lots of questions, critical thinking, and great conversations. We will provide a list of books used so you can choose to read them at home as well and take part in this unique learning adventure with your child.

Chess for Beginners
Chess has a long and proud tradition world wide and has gained recent attention in schools as a powerful and engaging way to develop critical thinking in children of all ages.  This class teaches the basics of chess strategy, all while having fun and providing a wonderful foundation for a life long love of the game.

Kids Yoga
A fun, exhilarating opportunity for kids to experience a playful approach to yoga. Yoga improves coordination, balance and movement integration and therefore is beneficial during all stages of a child’s development. Yoga games will introduce younger kids to the practice of yoga.


Explorers (ages 8-13)

Physical Fitness and Education
Movement plays an important role in helping students learn to self regulate and manage stress. Use our physical fitness and education class to ensure your child is learning about physical activity’s role in wellness and engaging in physical activity that will have them running, jumping and playing with peers both indoors and out.

Yoga and Meditation
Yoga improves coordination, balance and movement integration and therefore is beneficial during all stages of a child’s development. For  our middle grades, we begin to introduce yoga flows and knowledge  about the history and science behind this ancient practice.

Book Club
Join us for our FREE monthly discussion of a middle grade level book.  Students will read independently and meet for a weekly discussion  and exploration of themes presented in the book. The following  month’s selection will be announced the book club the month before.  Student suggestions for book club selections are welcome. Please note that books will be selected based on age range recommended by    authors and publishers but it is each parent’s responsibility to preview books.

Chess
Chess has a long and proud tradition world-wide and has gained recent attention in schools as a powerful and engaging way to develop critical thinking in children of all ages. As they progress in their mastery of this enthralling game and play matches with their peers social interaction and camaraderie become important additional benefits of this game that spans generations.

Critical Thinking
Using a variety of tools, such as experiments, games and puzzles, this class teaches the basics of critical thinking, including but not limited to evaluating evidence, inferences, facts and opinions, logical connections, common errors in reasoning and more.         

Music (Guitar)
Sign up for one-on-one or small group lessons with a talented and experienced music teacher.


Scholars (ages 13-18)

Math
Participants work in group to explore  mathematical thinking. Includes math tutoring for algebra, geometry and calculus.

Computer Engineering and Operating Systems
A mix of theory, history and general computing                                                

Current Events Discussion
Teens take an active role in this informal discussion group aimed at helping students stay abreast of local,   national or international news events. Emphasis is on critical thinking. Students are asked to come prepared  to discuss recent news events by watching or reading  news outlets of their choice. This group is limited to  older students due to the mature topics sometimes discussed.

Yoga and Meditation
Teens learn to coordinate breath with postures, which helps calm the mind, release the tension and sharpen the memory. Yoga also increases flexibility, tones the body and teaches teens to make healthy choices in life.
             
Physical Fitness and Education
An engaging combination of physical activity and wellness instruction.

Music (Guitar)
Sign up for one on one or small group lessons with a talented and experienced music teacher.

Maximize your Mind
Learn about the executive functioning skills we all need.  We will explore what those skills are, how to develop  them and how growth mindset helps teach us all that   we can indeed develop these important skills.  This class  will also include advanced critical thinking and logic games, puzzles and activities using a variety of  curricula.

Computer Graphics
Exploration of the wonderful world of computer assisted art via Photoshop and related programs.

Foreign Languages
Work one on one or in small groups with a tutor to supplement individual coursework on the language of your choice.  (Spanish, German, Italian)                                          

Costume and Fashion Design
This popular class returns. Costume and fashion design will help students nurture their creative selves and bring their costume and fashion design ideas out of your  head and onto the paper.

Book Club
Join us for our monthly discussion of a high school grade level book. Students will readindependently and meet for a weekly discussion and exploration of themes presented in the book. The following month’s selection will be announced at each book club gathering. Student suggestions for book club selections are welcome. Please note that books will be selected based on age range recommended by authors and publishers but it is each parent’s responsibility to preview books and determine if their child is permitted to read the book as readers may vary in maturity and social understanding.
